The Society of Medical NLP presents the 2009 Health Practitioner Licence Course
Nottingham, England November 25-29 inclusive
Suitable for CPD*, PDP and PREP
Dear Colleague,
For many years, medicine has concentrated on deficit and repair. Its approach has been problem-oriented, and the attention paid by its researchers and policy-makers to health and well-being (except as an absence of disease) has been negligible.
As a result, the need for skills and resources that help our patients (and ourselves) to move towards wellness, as opposed to away from illness, has become painfully clear. While Western medicine has been highly successful in defeating most infectious diseases, it is largely ineffective in dealing with the abundance of complex, chronic conditions, such as anxiety, depression, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, obesity, addictive behaviours, chronic pain, stress, and many musculoskeletal disorders.
One of the reasons is almost certainly that the simple cause-effect theory upon which the war on infection was based continues to be applied to problems that are complicated, multi-factorial, and often unique to the person seeking help.
While Evidence Based Medicine is crucial to the protection of the patient from spurious treatments, it has, unfortunately, been applied in a way that reduces, or even eliminates, the individual physician’s experience and intuition. This, together with increasing reliance on technology-based tests, is widening the gulf between patient and practitioner, and actively weakening the healing relationship. Multiple research projects suggest that a positive relationship between health profession and patient or client may be responsible for much of the success of the clinical outcome.
Several studies show that up to half of the problems for which patients seek help have no identifiable organic cause. It follows, then, that ignoring the quality of the healing relationship not only adversely affects patients, but actively weakens health professionals’ ability to help those who turn to them in need.
How can we help resolve the problem?
The Society of Medical NLP was formed to advance the principles and techniques of NLP, as co-created and developed by Dr Richard Bandler, specifically in the field of health care. Building on a technology of change established since the mid-1970s, it has proved highly valuable to the hundreds of doctors and other health professionals who have undergone our unique Medical NLP Health Practitioner and Master Practitioner licences. Countless numbers of patients and clients have benefited from their expertise.
Medical Neuro-Linguistic Programming is more than simply ‘Neuro-Linguistic Programming taught to doctors’. It has been systematically developed out of more than 15 years of full-time clinical practice together with the experience of doctors, medical students and allied health professionals we have been training since 1998. It offers a unique, practical, three-part consultation model that integrates seamlessly with the existing skills and practices of health professionals of all specialties. It also presents approaches to help the practitioner successfully intervene in some of the more troubling biopsychosocial conditions for which increasing numbers of patients are seeking help.
Since Medical NLP is a constantly evolving methodology, each course is somewhat different from the one before it. This year, our Health Practitioner Licence Training, covers both the underlying principles of NLP and the newest theory and practice of Medical NLP. Two licences (one by Dr Richard Bandler and his organisation, The Society of NLP) and the other by The Society of Medical NLP will be issued to successful participants.

Who will benefit from this training?
Our last course was attended by General Practitioners, Consultants and Registrars from Anaesthesia, Pain Medicine and Surgery, Counsellors, Communication Skills Tutors, Nurses, Clinical Nutritionists and Psychologists. This course is open to health professionals of all interests and specialties, but, above all, it is directed at those who wish to transcend a purely mechanistic approach to health care. Practitioners of Medical NLP tend regard themselves as practitioners of ‘salutogenic’ health care - that is, an approach that focuses on health and well-being, rather than deficit and repair.
What is my colleagues’ experience of the course?
These are just some of the comments from previous course participants:
“The course way surpassed my expectations. It has changed my view of the therapeutic encounter and given me a great source of ideas on which to work”
